BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team earned a 6-2 win over Iowa State, and then dropped an 11-0 decision to Murray State on the first day of the Samford/UAB  Classic Friday at the Samford Softball Stadium.
 
In the win over Iowa State, Madison Couch went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI. Lauren Lewis turned in a 2-for-3 performance with two RBI. Abbie Miranda and Hannah Trombley also drove in one run each for the Bulldogs.
 
Grey Adams (2-3) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford. Taylor DeCelles tossed the final 2.0 innings, giving up one run on one hit for the Bulldogs.
 
Iowa State was led by Talyn Lewis and Kaylee Bosworth, each driving in one run in 1-for-3 performances with a home run each. Savannah Sanders (3-3) pitched two-thirds of an inning, surrendering six runs on six hits to take the loss for the Cyclones.
 
Samford plated all six of its runs in the first inning. Lewis and Couch drove in two runs each in the inning. Miranda and Trombley also drove in a run each in the inning, as Samford sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, building a 6-0 lead.
 
Iowa State plated its first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Lewis led the inning off with a solo home run to right-center field to cut the Samford lead to 6-1.
 
In the seventh inning, the Cyclones plated one final run to make the final score 6-2. With two outs in the inning, Bosworth homered to left field for the game's final run.
 
In the loss to Murray State, Shelby Maze went 2-for-3 to lead Samford at the plate. Kelsey Royalty also had a hit for the Bulldogs. DeCelles (1-3) took the loss in the circle, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up four runs, just three earned, on five hits. Adams and Jessica Stone also pitched in the game for Samford.
 
Murray State was led by Jocelynn Rodgers, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Jessica Twaddle and Cayla Levins also had two hits and two RBI each for the Racers. Mason Robinson (7-1) pitched the full 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on just three hits to earn the win.
 
The teams were scoreless for the first three innings. Murray State plated a run in the fourth inning and three more in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. The Racers broke the game open with seven runs in the seventh inning to pull away for the 11-0 win.
 
With the split, Samford moves to 3-9 on the season. Iowa State is now 7-5, while Murray State improves to 9-2.
 
The Samford/UAB Classic will continue with games at UAB Saturday, and will conclude with contests back at Samford Sunday. Samford will open play Saturday with a rematch with Murray State at 11 a.m. Below is a schedule of remaining games in the Samford/UAB Classic.
