BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team defeated Indiana, 4-2, and dropped a 3-2 decision in eight innings to Murray State, on the second day of the Samford/UAB Classic Saturday at UAB's Mary Bowers Field.
In the win over Indiana, Samford was led by
Shelby Maze, going 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
Hannah Trombley homered in a 1-for-3 performance, driving in two runs.
Grey Adams (3-3) earned the win in the circle for the Bulldogs, pitching all 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits.
For Indiana, Amilia McDonough went 1-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Emily Goodin (2-3) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up four runs on four hits to take the loss for the Hoosiers.
The game was scoreless for the first three innings, until Samford took the lead with two runs in the third inning. Maze doubled to right-center field to drive in
Madison Couch and
Whitney Hinton to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage.
Indiana plated a run in the fourth inning to cut the Samford lead to 2-1. With one out in the inning, McDonough hit a solo homer to right field for Indiana's first run of the game.
In the fourth inning, Samford added two runs to push its lead to 4-1. Trombley homered down the left-field line with
Abbie Miranda on base for a three-run Samford lead.
Indiana plated the game's final run in the top of the sixth inning. Nicole Lawvere was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in McDonough to make the final score 4-2.
In the loss to Murray State, Samford built an early lead, but could not hold on as MSU came back for the 3-2, extra-inning win. Samford was led at the plate by Trombley, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Maze also went 2-for-3 for the Bulldogs.
Rebecca Leonard (0-2) tossed all 8.0 innings, giving up three runs, just two earned, on eight hits to take the loss.
For Murray State, Jessica Twaddle went 2-for-5 at the plate. Cayla Levins went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Madison Culver homered for the Racers, going 1-for-4 with an RBI. Haven Campbell (3-1) pitched the complete 8.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits to earn the win in the circle.
Samford plated both of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. Trombley singled to center field to drive in Maze and Couch for a 2-0 Samford lead.
Murray State scored a run in the top of the second inning to cut the Samford lead to 2-1. The Racers then added a run in the top of the seventh inning to knot the score at 2-2 and force extra innings.
In the top of the eighth inning, Kaylee Ranburger singled to third base to drive in Leah Kesel, who was placed on second base to start the inning, for the eventual game-winning run, giving Murray State the 3-2 win.
With the split, Samford's record moves to 4-10 on the season. Indiana is currently 4-8, while Murray State improves to 10-2.
The Samford/UAB Classic will conclude with four games Sunday at the Samford Softball Stadium, beginning at 9 a.m. A full schedule of Sunday's games is below.
