UT MARTIN GAME BOX SCORE
MARTIN, Tenn. – The Samford softball team picked up a pair of wins on the first day of the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic Saturday at Bettye Giles Field. The Bulldogs earned a 6-0 win over Western Illinois, and the team then picked up a 2-1 victory over the host, UT Martin.
In the win over Western Illinois,
Abby Sweeney went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI.
Shelby Maze went 3-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI.
Abbie Miranda went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for Samford.
Jessica Stone (3-2) pitched the complete 7.0 innings to pick up the win in the circle. Stone allowed just two hits in the victory.
Western Illinois was led by Jasmine Lara and Kelsey Marlow with one hit each. Emily Ira (4-9) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits to take the loss for the Leathernecks.
Samford grabbed an early lead with one run in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Miranda doubled to right-center field. Sweeney then singled to center field to drive in Miranda for a 1-0 Samford advantage.
The Bulldogs added two runs in the sixth inning, and then three more in the seventh to push their lead to 6-0. In the sixth, Sweeney doubled to right-center field to drive in Maze for the inning's first run.
Hannah Trombley then singled to drive in Sweeney. In the seventh inning, Maze singled to drive in
Lexie Higgins, and Miranda singled to drive in
Taylor DeCelles. The game's final run was scored when Sweeney walked with the bases loaded to drive in
Madison Couch.
Against UT Martin, Couch went 2-for-4 with a home run and one RBI. Sweeney also homered in the win, going 1-for-2 at the plate. In the two games combined, Sweeney went 4-for-5 with two doubles, a home run and four RBI.
Grey Adams (5-6) earned the win in the circle for Samford. Adams pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits, and striking out six batters in the victory.
UT Martin was led by Renate Meckl, going 1-for-3 with a home run and one RBI. Brooke Kennedy (7-2) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on four hits to take the loss for the Skyhawks.
Samford again grabbed the early lead when Couch led the game off with her first home run of the season for a 1-0 Bulldog advantage. UT Martin answered in the bottom of the fourth inning when Meckl hit a solo homer to left field to knot the score at 1-1.
The Bulldogs plated the game-winning run in top of the sixth inning when Sweeney hit a one-out solo homer to left-center field to give Samford a 2-1 advantage. Adams held UT Martin scoreless over the last two innings to preserve the win.
With the wins, Samford improves to 9-18 on the season. Western Illinois is now 9-16, and UT Martin falls to 17-7 with the losses.
Samford will continue play in the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic on Sunday. The Bulldogs will take on Western Illinois at 10 a.m. and UT Martin at 12:30 p.m. Links to follow Sunday's game are below.
