UT MARTIN GAME BOX SCORE
MARTIN, Tenn. – The Samford softball team split its two games Sunday on the final day of the Skyhawk Hampton Inn Classic at Bettye Giles Field. The Bulldogs defeated Western Illinois, 8-4, but fell to the host, UT Martin, 2-1.
In the win over Western Illinois, Abby Sweeney went 2-for-2 with two home runs and four RBI. Abbie Miranda went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Shelby Maze went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Jessica Stone (4-2) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up four runs on five hits to earn the win in the circle for Samford. Annalyn Yantis picked up the save for the Bulldogs, tossing the final inning.
For Western Illinois, Kelsey Marlow went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Sam Ralphs went 3-for-4 for the Leathernecks. Payton Abbott (2-5) pitched 3.2 innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits to take the loss for Western Illinois.
The teams scored two runs each in the first inning, and one run each in the third to knot the score at 3-3. Samford took control of the game with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-3 lead.
In the fourth inning, Maze singled up the middle to drive in Kathryn Jackson for the inning's first run. Miranda then doubled to drive in Maze. The final two runs were scored when Sweeney hit her second home run of the game, this one with Miranda on base for a four-run Samford lead.
Western Illinois plated a run in the top of the fifth, but Samford answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning to push its lead to 8-4.
Against UT Martin, Madison Couch led Samford, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hannah Trombley drove in a run in a 1-for-3 performance. Grey Adams (5-7) pitched 6.1 innings, giving up three runs on five hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
For UT Martin, Lauren Myers went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Carly Gonzalez went 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Skyhawks. Sara Hooten (6-2) earned the win in the circle, pitching 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on eight hits.
Samford jumped out to an early lead with one run in the first inning, and one more in the second. In the first inning, Trombley singled to drive in Maze for a 1-0 Samford lead. In the second inning, Couch singled to left-center field to drive in Whitney Hinton for a 2-0 Samford advantage.
UT Martin tied the game with two runs in the third inning. Gonzalez doubled to right-center field to drive in Alicia Hansen for the first run of the inning. Gracyn McBride later hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Gonzalez to knot the score at 2-2.
Neither team could score again until the final inning. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Myers singled to right-center field to drive in pinch runner Alexa Combs for a 3-2 Skyhawk victory.
With the split, Samford's record moves to 10-19 on the season. Western Illinois has a record of 9-18, while UT Martin now has a mark of 19-7.
Samford will return to action on Wednesday, March 22, when the Bulldogs play a doubleheader at Austin Peay. The first game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start from Clarksville, Tenn.
