CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Samford softball team was swept in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at Austin Peay. The Bulldogs fell in the games to the Governors by scores of 5-2 and 10-7.
In game one, Abby Sweeney drove in both of Samford's runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Shelby Maze went 2-for-4 for the Bulldogs. Jessica Stone (4-3) pitched the complete game, giving up five runs on nine hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
For Austin Peay, Carly Mattson went 3-for-3 with two home runs and two RBI. Danielle Liermann went 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Kelsey Gross (6-4) pitched the complete game, giving up two runs on eight hits and striking out nine batters to earn the win for Austin Peay.
Austin Peay plated a run in the first inning and two in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Samford came back with two runs in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Governors added a run in the fourth inning and another in the fifth to push their lead to 5-2. Samford was unable to score again the rest of the way as Austin Peay finished with the 5-2 win.
In the second game, Abbie Miranda went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and four RBI. Hannah Trombley went 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Sweeney also drove in a run, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Grey Adams (5-8) pitched the final two-thirds of an inning, giving up two runs on two hits to take the loss in the circle. Taylor DeCelles tossed 5.1 innings, allowing eight runs on five hits.
Austin Peay was led by Kendall Vedder, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Christiana Gable went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI for the Governors. Gross also earned the win in the second game, tossing 2.0 innings, giving up three runs on three hits.
Austin Peay again jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning on a three-run homer by Gable. Samford came back with two runs in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Sweeney and Trombley drove in a run each in the third for Samford.
After Austin Peay pushed its lead to 4-2 with a run in the fourth inning, Samford came back to take the lead with five runs in the top of the sixth inning. Miranda hit a grand slam to right field with Maze, Madison Couch and DeCelles on base to give Samford a 6-4 lead. Trombley then homered to left field to make the score 7-4.
Samford, however, could not hold the lead as Austin Peay came back with six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to retake the lead at 10-7. Vedder hit a three-run home run, Brett Jackson drove in a run and Kacy Acree drove in two runs in the decisive inning.
Samford was unable to plate any runs in the top of the seventh, and Austin Peay secured the 10-7 win.
With the losses, Samford falls to 10-21. Austin Peay improves to 10-14 with the sweep.
Samford will open Southern Conference play this weekend, with the Bulldogs hosting Furman in a three-game series. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m., and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Samford Softball Stadium.
