TROY, Ala. -- Samford junior first baseman Austin Edens turned in a 3-for-4 performance at the plate Tuesday with a home run and two RBI against the Troy Trojans, but nothing else fell into place for the Bulldogs as they suffered a 9-2 defeat on the road at Riddle-Pace Field (1,298).

With the loss, Samford (12-8) dropped its second straight decision. Despite the setback, the Bulldogs have been victorious in nine of their last 12 outings and will host a rematch with Troy (12-7) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT) at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Students are encouraged to arrive to the game early as the first 75 in attendance will receive a free Samford baseball shirt.

The Bulldogs own a 9-3 record at home this season and have not been defeated by Troy at Joe Lee Griffin Field in nearly four years, dating back to April 10, 2013.

On Tuesday, Troy jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with two runs in the second and four more in the third.

Samford scored its first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning as Edens turned on a 1-1 pitch from Evan Hebert (1-0) and blasted his sixth run of the season down the left field line.

Edens continued his hot streak at the plate Tuesday. The Bulldogs' junior preseason All-American has reached base in 17-consecutive games and is batting .486 in his last nine outings. Edens now leads the team in hitting at .352 and has driven in 15 runs this season.

Following Eden's home run in the top of the fourth, Samford trimmed Troy's lead to 4-1. Unfortunately, the Trojans answered with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth, as well as another run in the fifth to increase their lead to 9-1.

The Bulldogs tallied their second run of the game in the top of the ninth as Sam McWhorter pinch hit and ripped a double to right field. He then scored two pitches later as Edens singled to left-center field for his second RBI of the game.

Samford's Connor Radcliff (1-2) started the contest on the mound and was issued the loss. He was hurt by five walks allowed in two innings of action.

In the sixth frame, the Bulldogs' true freshman pitcher Matthew Bennett entered the game and struck out four hitters in two innings.

Both teams finished Tuesday's matchup with five hits, but Samford committed five errors, as compared to none for the Trojans.

Samford and Troy will square off again on the diamond Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Trojans travel north to face the Bulldogs in the second matchup of this week's home-and-home, two-game series. The game will be held on campus at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
