BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team dropped a 6-5 decision in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader versus Furman at the Samford Softball Stadium. The second game was suspended in the bottom of the fifth inning with Furman leading, 4-1.
In the first game,
Whitney Hinton went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI.
Shelby Maze went 2-for-4, and
Hannah Trombley drove in a run in a 1-for-3 performance.
Grey Adams (5-9) pitched 6.2 innings, giving up six runs on eight hits and allowing five walks to take the loss on the circle for Samford.
For Furman, Casey Bigham went 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI. Candace Johnson went 2-for-3 with a home run and one RBI. Lindsey Bert (8-7) pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits and recording seven strike outs to earn the win for the Paladins.
Furman jumped on top first with a run in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by Johnson. In the second inning, Bigham hit a two-run home run to push the Paladins' lead to 3-0.
Samford answered with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to knot the score at 3-3. With two outs in the inning,
Kelsey Royalty,
Taylor DeCelles and
Lexie Higgins walked to load the bases. Hinton then doubled to left-center field, clearing bases to tie the score.
The Bulldogs took the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Trombley doubled to center field to drive in Maze for a 4-3 Samford lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, Adams allowed five walks to bring in two Paladin runs to give Furman a 5-4 lead. Taylor Vahle then singled up the middle to drive in Elise Smith for a 6-4 Paladin advantage.
In the bottom of the seventh, Samford loaded the bases with two outs.
Abbie Miranda reached on an infield single to drive in Hinton to cut the lead to 6-5. On the play, however,
Madison Couch was thrown out at third base, ending the game.
In the second game, Furman scored a run in the second inning, and Samford answered with a run of its own in the third inning. In the top of the fifth inning, Furman's Johnson hit a three-run home run to give the Paladins a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth, Samford loaded the bases with one out before play was suspended due to rain and lightning in the Birmingham area. The game will resume Sunday at 1:30 p.m., weather permitting. The third and final game of the series will be played 30 minutes after the completion of Game 2.
With the loss, Samford falls to 10-22 overall and 0-1 in Southern Conference play. Furman improves to 15-14 overall and 1-0 in league play.
