BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Samford outfielder Abby Sweeney hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift the Bulldog softball team to a 5-4 win over Furman in the first game of a doubleheader split Sunday at the Samford Softball Stadium. Furman won the final game of the series, 9-0.
With the split on Sunday, Furman wins the series, two games to one. Samford's record moves to 11-23 overall and 1-2 in Southern Conference play. Furman is now 16-15 overall and 2-1 in league games.
Sunday's first game was a continuation of a suspended game that was started Saturday afternoon, but had to be halted due to inclement weather.
The game picked up Sunday in the bottom of the fifth inning, with Furman leading, 4-1. Samford had the bases loaded with one out in the inning when the game was resumed. With two outs, Sweeney hit a grand slam to left-center field with Shelby Maze, Madison Couch and Whitney Hinton on base to give Samford a 5-4 lead.
Samford pitcher Jessica Stone (5-3) retired Furman in order in the top of the sixth inning. After Samford went scoreless in the top of the seventh, Furman loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, but Taylor DeCelles was able to come in and close out the win. Stone earned the win in the circle for Samford, while DeCelles picked up her first save of the season.
For Samford at the plate in the win, Sweeney drove in four runs, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Maze went 3-for-3 with an RBI in the game.
Furman was led in the game by Candace Johnson, who homered and drove in three runs in a 1-for-4 performance. Taylor Vahle went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Courtney Jacobs went 2-for-3. Emily Demonte (4-8) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up five runs on five hits to take the loss for the Paladins.
In the final game of the series, Furman's Lindsey Bert (9-7) pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout for the Paladins. Furman plated two runs in the third inning and one in the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
AnnaRose Borrelli hit a grand slam in the fifth inning for Furman to push its lead to 7-0. The Paladins added two more runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 9-0.
For Samford in the final game, Maze went 2-for-3 at the plate. Rebecca Leonard (0-4) tossed 3.0 innings, giving up three runs on three hits to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
Furman was led at the plate by Borrelli, going 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI. Brittany Houston went 4-for-4 with two RBI for the Paladins.
Samford will return to action Wednesday, March 29, when the Bulldogs host Kennesaw State. The game is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start from the Samford Softball Stadium.
