Errors Prove Costly In Softball's Loss To KSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford softball team committed five errors, allowing eight unearned runs in a 9-1, five inning loss to Kennesaw State Wednesday evening at the Samford Softball Stadium.

Samford freshman Whitney Hinton produced the Bulldogs' lone run of the contest with a solo home run in a 1-for-3 performance. Shelby Maze, Kathryn Jackson, Kelsey Royalty and Taylor DeCelles also had a hit each for Samford.

Jessica Stone (5-4) took the loss in the circle for Samford. She pitched 5.0 innings, giving up nine runs, just one earned, on nine hits on the night.

Kennesaw State was led by Katie Byrd and Taylor Denton, driving in two runs each for the Owls. Logan Viers (8-4) pitched 3.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits to pick up the win for Kennesaw State.

KSU jumped on top early with five runs in the top of the second inning. The Owls were aided by three costly Samford errors as KSU took the 5-0 advantage. KSU added three more runs, with Samford committing two more errors in the third inning for an 8-0 Owl lead.

Samford scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. With two outs in the inning, Hinton hit her third home run of the season to left-center field to cut the KSU lead to 8-1. Kennesaw State added one final run in the top of the fourth inning to push its lead to 9-1.

With the loss, Samford falls to 11-24 on the season. Kennesaw State improves to 25-9 with the win.

Samford will return to action on Saturday when the Bulldogs open a three-game Southern Conference series at Chattanooga.
