STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Samford softball team battled for 12 innings with Mississippi State before falling, 6-5, on a walk-off home run on the second day of the Bulldog Slamboree Saturday at Nusz Park. Earlier on Saturday, Samford fell to Massachusetts, 13-0 in five innings.
Samford led Mississippi State, 1-0 entering the seventh inning. MSU's Kat Moore doubled to left field to drive in Katie Anne Bailey to tie the score and force extra innings.
Neither team scored again until the 10th inning when Samford's Madison Couch singled to center field to drive in Abbie Miranda for a 2-1 Samford lead. MSU, however answered when Caroine Seitz doubled to left field to drive in Moore for a 2-2 tie.
In the 11th inning, Samford's Lauren Lewis reached on an infield single to drive in Couch to give Samford a 3-2 lead. Mississippi State, however, answered again when Sarai Niu scored when Bevia Robinson reached base on a fielder's choice for a 3-3 tie.
Samford took a two-run lead in the top of the 12th inning when Whitney Hinton homered to left field with Lexie Higgins on base for a 5-3 Samford lead. In the bottom of the inning, Mississippi State's Reggie Harrison hit her own two-run homer to knot the score at 5-5. Seitz later homered to left field to give MSU the 6-5, walk-off win.
For Samford in the game, Hinton was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Shelby Maze also had two hits for Samford. Taylor DeCelles (1-5) turned in a strong pitching performance, tossing all 11.1 innings, giving up six runs, just three earned, on nine hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
Mississippi State was led by Harrison and Seitz, each hitting a home run and driving in two runs. Alexis Silkwood (9-0) pitched 12.0 innings, allowing five runs, two earned, on eight hits to earn the win for MSU.
In the loss to UMass, Abby Sweeney had Samford's lone hit in the game. Grey Adams (3-4) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three runs on seven hits in taking the loss for the Bulldogs.
Massachusetts was led by Kaitlyn Stavinoha, going 4-for-4 with four RBI. Nicole Imhof and Ashton Wince drove in two runs each in the win for UMass. Candace Denis (1-3) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up no runs on just one hit to pick up the win in the circle.
UMass took an early lead with one run in the top of the first inning and two in the top of the third for a 3-0 lead. The game was broken open when UMass plated 10 runs in the top of the fifth inning to earn the 13-0 win.
With the losses, Samford falls to 5-14. UMass is now 3-10, while Mississippi State improves to 17-3.
