Softball Sweeps DH At Tennessee Tech

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. –
The Samford softball team swept a non-conference doubleheader at Tennessee Tech Wednesday evening. The Bulldogs won game one by a score of 5-1, and the then won the second game, 9-1 in five innings.

In game one for Samford, Abby Sweeney, Abbie Miranda and Lexie Higgins each homered to lead the Bulldogs. Shelby Maze and Whitney Hinton each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Jessica Stone (8-4) pitched 6.0 innings, giving up one run on four hits to pick up the win in the circle for the Bulldogs.

For Tennessee Tech in the first game, Kelly Kennedy went 3-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Taylor Waldrop (1-3) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up three runs on five hits to take the loss for the Golden Eagles.

Samford got the scoring started with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Sweeney led the inning off with a solo home run. Higgins later hit a two-run homer for a 3-0 Samford lead.

Tennessee Tech plated its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning on a solo home run by Kennedy. Samford then added two final runs in the seventh inning on a two-run home run by Miranda to make the final score 5-1.

In game two, Higgins went 3-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBI. Hinton went 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBI. Rebecca Leonard (1-4) pitched 4.0 innings, allowing no runs on one hit to pick up the win in the circle for Samford.

Tennessee Tech was led in game two by Gabby Perez, going 1-for-2 at the plate. Ashley McGowan drove in the Golden Eagles' lone run of game two. Kayla Hughes (1-2) pitched 2.2 innings, giving up seven runs on five hits to take the loss for Tennessee Tech.

Samford jumped on top early again with a run in the second inning when Higgins singled to drive in Hinton.

Samford then took control of the game with six runs in the third inning. Higgins hit a three-run home run in the inning, her second of the doubleheader. Lauren Lewis drove in two runs, and Madison Couch scored on a wild pitch as Samford took a 7-0 advantage.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the fourth inning to push their lead to 9-0. Hinton doubled down the left-field line to drive in Couch and Karsin Spinks for a nine-run Samford advantage.

Tennessee Tech put its lone run of the game on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh inning. Amity Brown scored from third base on a ground out by McGowan to make the final score 9-1.

With the sweep, Samford improves to 18-25 overall. Tennessee Tech falls to 13-25 with the losses.

Samford will return to Southern Conference play this weekend with a three-game series at UNC Greensboro. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 12 p.m. (CT), and a single game Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT).
