GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford softball team was swept in a Southern Conference doubleheader at UNC Greensboro Friday afternoon. The Bulldogs fell in game one, 9-1 in five innings, and then in game two by a score of 9-3.
In game one for Samford, Shelby Maze drove in the Bulldogs' lone run, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Whitney Hinton went 2-for-2 with a double for Samford. Grey Adams (7-11) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up four runs on seven hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
UNCG was led in the first game by Rachael McClaskey, going 2-for-2 with a home run and one RBI. Jasmine Palmer and Gabrielle Cubbage also homered in the game for the Spartans. Alica Bazonski (15-10) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up one run on six hits to earn the win for UNCG.
UNCG plated a run in each of the first three innings to take an early 3-0 advantage. Samford came back to cut the lead to 3-1 with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
The Spartans, however, put the game away with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kayleigh Willis drove in two runs in the inning, while Cubbage and Jordan Gontram drove in a run each. Sidney Grkman and Emily Lopez both scored on Samford errors as UNCG pulled away for the 9-1 win.
In the second game for Samford, Kelsey Royalty homered and drove in three runs in a 1-for-3 performance at the plate. Jessica Stone (8-5) took the loss in the circle for Samford, pitching 5.0 innings, giving up five runs, just four earned, on seven hits.
For UNCG in game two, Marisa Sholtes went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Emily Acquaviva hit a grand slam, going 1-for-3 with four RBI. Stephanie Bryden (1-0) pitched 4.2 innings, giving up no runs on one hit to pick up the win in the circle.
After UNCG took the early lead with a run in the bottom of the first inning, Samford came back with three runs in the third inning. Royalty hit a three-run home run with Karsin Spinks and Kathryn Jackson on base for a 3-1 Samford lead.
UNCG cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning. The Spartans then plated seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Acquaviva hit a grand slam to account for four runs in the inning. McClaskey drove in two runs, while Sholtes drove in one run as the Spartans came away with the six-run win.
With the losses, Samford's record falls to 18-27 overall and 6-5 in SoCon play. UNCG's record is now 23-17 overall and 6-2 in league games.
