GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford softball team will return to Southern Conference play when the Bulldogs play a three-game series at UNCG this weekend. The teams will play a doubleheader Friday at 12 p.m. (CT), and a single game Saturday at 12 p.m. (CT).
The winner of this weekend's series will move into second place in the SoCon standings by itself behind first-place Furman. Samford is currently 18-25 overall and 6-3 in SoCon games. UNCG has a record of 21-17 overall and 4-2 in league play.
Samford swept a non-conference doubleheader at Tennessee Tech Wednesday, winning the games by scores of 5-1 and 9-1 in five innings. Last weekend, the Bulldogs won two-of-three games in a SoCon series with ETSU.
Samford has been led at the plate this season by center fielder Shelby Maze, who leads the SoCon and ranks fourth nationally in hits with 67. She also leads the SoCon in batting (.429), and she is tied for the league lead in runs scored (35).
Madison Couch is tied for third in the SoCon in hits with 45, and she ranks third in the league in runs scored with 30, and eighth in batting, with a .328 average. Abby Sweeney is tied for second in the league in RBI with 31, and she is tied for fourth in the SoCon in home runs with seven. Abbie Miranda is tied for sixth in the league in doubles with 10 so far this season, and Kelsey Royalty and Maze are tied for second in the league in triples with two. Royalty also ranks third in the SoCon in stolen bases with 18.
In the circle, Grey Adams ranks second in the league in appearances (26), third in strikeouts (86) and innings pitched (121.1), and sixth in wins (7). Jessica Stone is tied for third in the league in wins (8).
UNCG is coming off a 7-2 non-conference loss to Charlotte Tuesday. The Spartans lost two-of-three games at Mercer last weekend.
