ATLANTA, Ga. – The Samford softball team was swept in a doubleheader at Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs fell in the first game, 8-0 in five innings, and in the second game by a score of 9-1 in six innings.
In game one,
Abbie Miranda supplied Samford's lone hit of the game, going 1-for-1 with a single and a walk.
Grey Adams (10-12) pitched 2.1 innings, giving up seven runs, six earned, on five hits to take the loss in the circle for Samford.
Jessica Stone also pitched in the game for the Bulldogs.
Georgia Tech was led in the first game by Katie Krzus, going 3-for-3 with an RBI. Draven Sonnon went 1-for-1 with a three-run home run and four RBI. Malea Bell and Kaylee Ellebracht also drove in a run each for the Yellow Jackets. Emily Anderson (8-13) threw a one-hit shutout, striking out eight batters to earn the win for Georgia Tech.
Georgia Tech scored five runs in the first inning, two runs in the third inning and one more in the fourth to take an 8-0 lead into the fifth inning. With one out in the inning, Miranda singled to break up Anderson's no-hitter. The Bulldogs, however, were unable to bring a run in and the game ended at 8-0.
In game two,
Whitney Hinton hit a solo home run, going 1-for-2 at the plate.
Shelby Maze went 1-for-3 with a double in the game.
Taylor DeCelles (2-8) pitched 4.0 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits to take the loss. Adams and
Annalyn Yantis also pitched in game two for the Bulldogs.
For Georgia Tech in game two, Sonnon homered again, driving in three runs in a 1-for-2 performance. Jessica Kowalewicz went 3-for-4 for the Yellow Jackets, while Samantha Pierannunzi, Krzus and Kelsey Chisholm had two hits each. Anderson (9-13) earned her second win of the day, pitching 1.2 innings in relief, allowing just one hit.
Samford took the lead with a run in the top of the third inning. With one out in the inning, Hinton homered to left field to give Samford a 1-0 advantage.
Georgia Tech, however, plated five runs in the fifth inning, and four more in the sixth to end the game at 9-1. In the fifth inning, Krzus and Sonnon drove in two runs each. Krzus also scored on a Samford error in the inning. In the sixth inning, Isabella Many drove in two runs, while Sonnon and Bell drove in a run each.
With the losses, Samford falls to 21-32 on the season. Georgia Tech improves to 17-33 with the sweep.
Samford will wrap up its regular season with a three-game Southern Conference series at Western Carolina next weekend. The Bulldogs and Catamounts will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday.
