Softball Splits Doubleheader At Western Carolina

CULLOWHEE, N.C. –
The Samford softball team split a Southern Conference doubleheader at Western Carolina Saturday at the Catamount Softball Complex. The Bulldogs earned a 7-4 win in game two of the twin bill, after falling, 5-1 in the first game.
 
In the 7-4 win in game two, Abby Sweeney went 4-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Shelby Maze went 3-for-3 with two triples and an RBI. Maze now has 82 hits on the season, becoming just the third player in school history to collect over 80 hits in a single season. Hannah Trombley went 2-for-5, while Abbie Miranda and Kelsey Royalty drove in two runs each for the Bulldogs.
 
Jessica Stone (9-7) gave up just one run on four hits over 7.0 innings to pick up the win in the circle for Samford. Rebecca Leonard also pitched in the game for the Bulldogs.
 
Western Carolina was led in game two by Abigail Daniels, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Madison Armstrong homered, driving in one run in a 1-for-2 performance. Shaina Reed (3-7) tossed 2.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits to take the loss for the Catamounts.
 
Samford plated a run in the first inning, three more in the third inning and another in the fourth inning, as the Bulldogs jumped out to a 5-1 lead. The Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning, and Western Carolina plated three final runs in the bottom of the seventh as Samford came away with the 7-4 win.
 
In the game one, 5-1 loss for Samford, Madison Couch hit a solo home run in a 1-for-3 performance. Maze also had a hit in the loss for the Bulldogs. Grey Adams (10-13) pitched 4.2 innings, giving up five runs on six hits to take the loss for Samford. Taylor DeCelles also pitched in the game for Samford.
 
For Western Carolina in game one, Ashlyn Long homered, driving in one run in a 1-for-4 performance at the plate. Daniels and Kara Salvo had two hits each, while Courtney Price drove in two runs for the Catamounts. Kinsey Liscio (1-5) earned the win in the circle, tossing 5.0 innings and allowing just one hit.
 
Western Carolina plated a run in the first inning and another in the third to take an early 2-0 lead. The Catamounts added three more runs in the fifth inning to push their lead to 5-0. Samford plated its lone run of the game on Couch's solo homer in the top of the sixth inning to make the final score 5-1.
 
With the split, Samford's record moves to 22-33 overall and 10-7 in Southern Conference play. Western Carolina is now 16-28 overall and 5-11 in league games.
