BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team swept a Southern Conference doubleheader from ETSU, earning wins by scores of 2-0 and 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the Samford Softball Stadium.
With the wins, Samford improves to 16-24 overall and 6-2 in Southern Conference play. ETSU falls to 16-19 overall and 2-3 in SoCon games. Samford has now won five games in a row, following a series sweep at Chattanooga last weekend.
"These last two weekends have been very successful for us in all areas," Samford head coach Mandy Burford said. "The dugout's been amazing and we've had some timely hitting. We're starting to not leave as many runners on base. The pitching's been outstanding. I can't say enough about Grey (Adams) and Jess (Jessica Stone) today."
In Saturday's first game, Grey Adams (7-9) pitched the complete 7.0 innings, giving up no runs on just two hits. She recorded seven strikeouts in the 2-0 win.
At the plate in game one, Abbie Miranda went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Madison Couch also drove in a run, while Whitney Hinton went 2-for-3 at the plate.
For ETSU in game one, Malloree Schurr and Nikki Grupp had the Bucs' only two hits. Madison Ogle (7-9) pitched 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on seven hits and striking out seven batters to take the loss in the circle.
Samford plated a run in the first inning and another in the third for the winning 2-0 margin. In the first inning, Hinton singled to center field, and with two outs, Miranda doubled to right-center field to drive in Hinton for the game's first run. In the third inning, Couch was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to drive in Shelby Maze for the final run of the game.
In game two for Samford, Jessica Stone (7-4) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up two runs, just one earned, on five hits to earn the win. Couch led the team at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBI. Maze went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI.
ETSU was led in game two by Taylor Carter and Kelsey Chernak, driving in one run each. Lindsey Fadnek (3-3) tossed 6.0 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits to take the loss in the circle for the Bucs.
ETSU took an early lead in the second game with two runs in the top of the second inning. Carter singled to left field to drive in Tiffany Laughren for a 1-0 Bucs' lead. Chernak later hit a sacrifice fly to left field to drive in Grupp for a 2-0 advantage.
Samford came back with a run in the third inning to cut the ETSU lead to 2-1. Maze scored when Miranda reached base on an ETSU error to bring Samford to within one run.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good with two runs in the fourth inning. Maze doubled to center field, driving in Kelsey Royalty. Maze came around to score on the play on another ETSU error to give Samford a 3-2 lead.
Samford put the final two runs on the scoreboard in the fifth inning to make the score 5-2. Abby Sweeney doubled to left field with one out. Couch then homered to left field to give Samford a three-run advantage.
The teams will wrap up the series with a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Samford Softball Stadium. Links to follow the game are below.
