BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- In front of a season-high 919 fans Tuesday, the Samford University volleyball team earned a thrilling 25-23 victory in the opening set of its non-conference matchup against the Alabama Crimson Tide, but then the Bulldogs dropped a close 26-24 decision in the second stanza and couldn't recover in a 3-1 loss held at the Pete Hanna Center.

Samford (3-8), in its first home match in over two weeks, came out blazing in the opening set. The Bulldogs came back from an early deficit and rallied for the key 25-23 win in the frame. Junior outside hitter, Krista Boesing, paced all competitors with 18 kills and finished with a team-best .204 hitting percentage.

Samford's previous seven matches have all been on the road in consecutive tournaments held in Chicago, Illinois, and Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Grace Tiesman posted 18 digs in the Tuesday's contest, while Boesing and Kelsi Hobbs notched 11 apiece. Boesing's double-double proved to be her fourth of the 2017 campaign.

Junior Taylor Anderton, Samford's talented setter from Collierville, Tennessee, closed out the match with a game-high 42 assists.

Alabama (8-2) eked out the second set by a score of 26-24 and took control of the momentum in the contest. The Crimson Tide then earned victories of 25-12 and 25-15 in sets No. 3 and No. 4, respectively.

With the victory, Alabama extended its winning streak to five straight matches. Since losing to Southern Miss, 3-0, on Sept. 2, the Crimson Tide has defeated McNeese State, 3-2, Tennessee State, 3-0, Hofstra, 3-0, Furman, 3-1, and Samford, 3-1.

The Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Friday at 4 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs square off against the FGCU Eagles in the opening match of competition at the 2017 Hoosier Classic Volleyball Tournament being hosted by Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Samford will also face undefeated Indiana on Saturday at 11 a.m., and UNLV at 4 p.m.
