BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University volleyball team suffered a 3-0 decision at home against The Citadel Bulldogs on Friday in a Southern Conference-opening matchup held at the Pete Hanna Center. The Citadel won the contest by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23.

With the loss, Samford (5-10, 0-1 SoCon) had its two-match winning streak snapped. Last week, the Bulldogs closed out the 2017 Hoosier Classic with road victories against both Indiana, 3-2, and UNLV, 3-1.

Samford will next be in action Saturday at 7 p.m., against Wofford. The match will be held at home in the Pete Hanna Center.

The Citadel (6-11, 1-0 SoCon) extended its winning streak to two matches Friday. Earlier this week, the Bulldogs earned a lopsided 3-0 victory over Savannah State. The Citadel won by scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-21, in the home triumph over SSU on Tuesday.

Sharlissa De Jesus paced The Citadel with 11 kills Friday. She also added 14 digs en route to a double-double performance against Samford. Megan Fuhr led The Citadel with 18 assists, while Moriah Smith and Caricia Rodriguez added double-digit digs with 12 and 11, respectively.

Samford's Krista Boesing led all competitors with 12 kills in the match. Sophomore Grace Tiesman registered a team-high 12 digs, while Taylor Anderton accumulated a game-best 29 assists.

Following this weekend's pair of home SoCon matches against The Citadel and Wofford, the Samford University volleyball team will next be in action Sept. 29 and 30, as the Bulldogs travel to Western Carolina and UNCG for two key road conference matchups.
