Basketball Comes Up Short On The Road At Furman, 78-67

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Samford University basketball team rallied from 12 points down in the opening half of action to trim Furman's lead to 47-44 early in the second period, but the Bulldogs couldn't overcome the homestanding Paladins down the stretch in a 78-67 Southern Conference loss held at Timmons Arena.
 
With the loss, Samford (7-13, 3-4 SoCon) moved to 1-10 when playing on the road this season. The Bulldogs will next be in action Wednesday as they travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for a showdown against the Chattanooga Mocs at 6 p.m. (CT).
 
Furman (14-6, 5-2 SoCon) improved to 9-2 at home and snapped a two-game losing streak. The Paladins were paced by four players scoring in double figures.
 
Daniel Fowler led Furman with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Matt Rafferty and Andrew Brown both tallied 15 points each. Rafferty also compiled a team-high seven assists in the contest. Rounding out the Paladins' double-digit scorers proved to be John Davis with 11 points.
 
Samford's offensive attack was led by junior point guard Justin Coleman, who scored 20 points and added a game-high eight assists. The Bulldogs' lightning-quick native of Birmingham, Alabama, shot 8-of-14 from the field in 34 minutes of playing time.
 
Senior forward Alex Thompson also turned in an impressive offensive performance Saturday with 17 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor. Thompson pulled down five rebounds and drained a team-high three 3-pointers in the game.
 
Additionally, Samford received eight points from Eric Adams and seven from Josh Sharkey.
 
The Bulldogs outshot Furman in field-goal percentage (49.0 to 44.8), 3-point field-goal percentage (38.1 to 31.0) and free-throw shooting (91.7 to 85.0), but the Paladins outrebounded Samford, 34-23, and tallied a 14-2 advantage in second-chance points.
 
Furman only committed a total of five turnovers Saturday, while forcing the Bulldogs into 11.
 
The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs remain on the road to face the Chattanooga Mocs in a pivotal conference contest to be held at The McKenzie Arena in downtown Chattanooga, Tennessee.
