BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball team dropped a 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-16, 24-26, 16-18) Southern Conference road contest at Chattanooga Wednesday evening at Maclellean Gymnasium. With the loss, Samford falls to 10-11 overall and 5-2 in Southern Conference play.
KEY MOMENTS
· In the first set Samford jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but UTC fought back to take a 5-4 advantage.
· Samford answered with a 6-0 run to take a 10-5 lead, and the Bulldogs never trailed on their way to a 25-19 set victory.
· The second set was tight early until Chattanooga was able to separate for an 18-12 lead.
· Samford fought back to cut the lead to three points at 23-20, but Chattanooga scored the final two points for the 25-20 set win.
· In the third set, Samford took an early 5-2 lead, but the Mocs came back to knot the score at 10-10.
· Samford, however, used a 10-3 run to take a 20-13 lead on its way to a 25-16 win.
· Samford led for the majority of the fourth set.
· With the Bulldogs leading, 24-21, Chattanooga scored five-straight points to take a 26-24 set win to force and fifth and deciding set.
· With the score tied at 10-10 in the fifth set, Chattanooga scored three-straight points to take a 13-10 lead, but Samford scored the next four points take a 14-13 lead.
· The teams traded the next few points until Chattanooga's Emily Plumlee's kill gave the Mocs the 18-16 set win and the 3-2 match victory.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
· Lauren Deaton led Samford with 19 kills and 22 digs.
· Shayla Phillip had 15 kills, while Krista Boesing and Briana Holmes added 13 kills each.
· Courtney Johnson had 23 digs.
· Taylor Anderton added 59 assists in the loss.
