
Cross-Country Teams have Strong Outings before Championships

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Samford men's and women's cross-country teams attended the UAB Blazer Classic in Montevallo on Friday as their last meet before conference championships.
The women's team finished with an average time of 22:30.93, good enough to finish fifth overall and beat out conference foe Mercer, and the host team, UAB. Shian Mallory finished sixth overall in the 6K and finished with a time of 21:26.65. Kathryn Foreman finished 22nd at 22:16.27, Mary Grace Strozier finished 30th at 22:31.28, and Allie Nelson finished 46th with a time of 22:57.85. Mary Kellison Thorne finished with a time of 23:22.60 and freshman Taryn Donohue finished 65th at 23:27.78. Carter Marchbanks, and Veronica Lyle finished the race right with each other in 73rd and 74th place at times of 23:37.06 and 23:39.11. Anna Huntington finished the day for the Bulldogs coming in 79th with a time of 23:50.95.
The men's team also had a top five finish at the Blazer Classic in the Men's 8K. Dillon Dean placed in the top five individually and finished at 24:32.89. Owen Bailey, Ben Bryant, and Brad Cheek all finished within the top 30 at 24th, 29th, and 30th with times of 25:21.30, 25:27.63, and 25:35.82. Paul Richardson was the next Bulldog to cross the line at 38th with a time of 25:53.81. Ben Garner finished at a time of 26:15.94 as the 45th runner to cross the finish line and Sam Katulich wrapped up the day for the Bulldogs coming in 61st with a time of 27:13.97. The men finished with an average time of 25:22.29 and beat out Tennessee and Mercer.
Both the men's and women's cross-country teams were picked to finish third in the Southern Conference preseason poll. The teams will compete in the Southern Conference Championships in Cullowhee, North Carolina on the campus of Western Carolina on October 27.
