Women's Hoops Falls In Tough Road Battle At Hampton

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Samford women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought road contest at Hampton, 64-57, Wednesday evening at the Hampton Convocation Center.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 2-5 on the season. Hampton improves to 3-1 with the win.

  • Samford sophomore Natalie Armstrong scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs in the loss.
  • Charity Brown scored 12 points and dished out seven assists for Samford.
  • Paige Serup scored 11 points, while Cassidy Williams followed with 10 points.
  • Hampton was led by Lauren Vanarsdale with 23 points.
  • Ashley Bates scored 16 points, while Mina Porte added 14 points for the Lady Pirates.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Samford jumped out to an early 7-3 lead with 5:22 to go in the first quarter after a three-pointer by Serup.
  • After Hampton cut the lead to 7-5, Samford went on a 9-0 run to push its lead to 16-5 with 1:30 left in the opening period following a three-pointer by Armstrong.
  • Samford held a 16-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Hampton opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run to take a 19-18 lead with 1:53 to go in the quarter.
  • A three-pointer by Williams gave Samford the lead back at 21-19 with 1:48 to go before halftime.
  • Hampton, however, scored the final four points of the quarter and the Pirates took a 23-21 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Samford took a 27-23 lead on back-to-back three-pointers by Serup with 9:11 to go in the third quarter.
  • The Bulldogs took a 35-29 lead with 5:03 to go in the period following a three-pointer by Brown.
  • Hampton fought back to tie the score at 37-37 with 3:07 left in the third quarter.
  • Samford, however, held a 42-41 advantage at the end of three quarters.
  • With Samford leading, 46-44 in the final quarter, Hampton went on a 10-4 run to take a 54-50 lead with 2:15 left in the game.
  • Samford, however, came back to tie the score at 55-55 with 1:36 to go on a layup by Brown.
  • With the game tied at 57-57, Hampton's Vanarsdale hit five free throws, and Dior Dioum hit two to help the Pirates pull away for the 64-57 win.
