Men's Hoops Falls In OT Thriller To Belmont, 99-93

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford men's basketball team took undefeated Belmont to overtime, but eventually fell to the Bruins by a score of 99-93 Thursday night in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
The game marked Samford's first overtime game since Feb. 22, 2017, when the Bulldogs earned a 72-68 win over Chattanooga. Samford falls to 7-2 with the loss. Belmont remains undefeated at 6-0 with the victory.

  • Myron Gordon scored a career-high 22 points to lead Samford.
  • Josh Sharkey scored 21 points and dished out six assists.
  • Ruben Guerrero had 20 points and 12 rebounds.
  • Kevion Nolan scored 15 points, while Robert Allen added 11 points and 10 rebounds.
  • For Belmont, Dylan Windler led the way with 31 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Nick Hopkins added 21 points for the Bruins.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Samford jumped out to an early 6-3 lead with 18:39 left in the first half after a jumper by Gordon.
  • Belmont came back to take a 9-8 lead, but Samford scored the next five points to take a 13-9 lead with 15:15 left in the half following a free throw by Guerrero.
  • Belmont, however, scored the next seven points to take a 16-13 lead with 12:54 left in the opening half.
  • Belmont pushed its lead out to nine points at 28-19 with 9:24 left in the half, but Samford scored the next eight points to cut the lead to 28-27 with 8:12 to go in the first half after a three-point play by Gordon.
  • Belmont then extended its lead to five points at 32-27 with 5:03 left in the half.
  • With the Bruins leading, 37-32, Samford scored the next five points to knot the score at 37-37 with 2:18 to go in the half.
  • Belmont scored six of the final eight points of the half to take a 43-39 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • After Belmont pushed its lead to six points early in the second half, Samford fought back to cut the lead to one point at 50-49 with 16:28 to go after a layup by Allen.
  • With Samford trailing, 53-51, Belmont went on a 10-2 run to take a 63-53 lead with 12:01 to go in regulation.
  • Belmont built its lead to 13 points at 70-57, but Samford fought back to cut the lead to five points at 70-65 with 8:00 to go in the second half.
  • With Belmont leading, 79-72, Samford fought back to cut the lead to two at 81-79 with 11 seconds left.
  • Belmont's Nick Hopkins then made one of two free throws to make the score 82-79 with 10 seconds left.
  • Samford's Nolan then hit a three-pointer from the right corner with one second left to knot the score at 82-82 and send the game to overtime.
  • In overtime, with Samford leading, 86-85, Belmont went on a 9-3 run to take a 94-89 lead with 1:18 to go.
  • Samford came back to cut the lead to three points at 96-93, but the Bulldogs could get no closer as Belmont pulled out the 99-93 win.
