Bulldogs Open Season With Impressive Win

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford men's basketball team shot 62.3 percent from the floor as the Bulldogs opened the 2018-19 season with an impressive 91-74 win over North Alabama Tuesday night in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The game was close early until, with Samford leading, 19-13, the Bulldogs went on a 17-5 run to take a 36-18 lead with 9:52 to go in the first half after a three-pointer by Robert Allen.
  • UNA cut the lead to 15 points at 36-21 with 6:37 to go in the opening half.
  • Samford extended its first-half lead to 21 points at 44-23 with 4:12 to go in the period after a layup by Josh Sharkey.
  • The Bulldogs took a 49-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Early in the second half, Samford pushed its lead out to 29 points at 64-35 after a jumper by Ruben Guerrero with 14:41 to go in the game.
  • Samford's largest lead in the game was 33 points at 84-51 with 5:37 to go after a jumper by Kevion Nolan.
  • UNA made a late run, but it was not enough as the Bulldogs cruised to the 91-74 win.

  • Josh Sharkey had an outstanding overall game with 18 points, six rebounds and seven assists to lead Samford in the victory.
  • Myron Gordon, in his first game in a Samford uniform, led the team in scoring with 19 points.
  • Ruben Guerrero, in his first game after sitting out last season as a transfer, scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds.
  • Kevion Nolan and Brandon Austin had nine points each. Austin also grabbed nine rebounds, while Nolan dished out four assists.
  • The 91 points mark the first time Samford has scored 90 or more in a season-opening game since the 1987-88 team opened the season with a 90-72 win over Tennessee State.
