Sharkey's Huge Night Lifts Men's Hoops To 92-72 Win Over JSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
Junior guard Josh Sharkey turned in a career night in leading the Samford men's basketball team to a 92-72 win over Jacksonville State Friday night in the Pete Hanna Center. Samford improves to 2-0 with the win, while JSU falls to 0-1.

  • Josh Sharkey turned in his second career double-double and nearly missed a triple-double with 22 points, 10 assists and a career-high eight steals. The 10 assists tie a career high for Sharkey.
  • Ruben Guerrero scored 14 points for the Bulldogs.
  • Brandon Austin scored a career-high 13 points.
  • Robert Allen scored a career-high 11 points as well for Samford.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • The game was tight early in the first half.
  • With JSU leading, 5-4, Samford went on a 31-9 run to take a 35-14 lead with 6:25 left in the half following a pair of free throws by Josh Sharkey.
  • The Bulldogs led by as many as 26 points in the first half at 47-21 with 1:49 left before halftime after a three-pointer by Sharkey.
  • Samford took a 47-28 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • Jacksonville State opened the second half with a 12-6 run to cut the lead to 13 at 53-40 with 15:46 to go in the game.
  • Samford pushed the lead back out to 20 at 61-41 with 13:09 to go after a free throw by Myron Gordon.
  • Samford increased its lead to as many as 25 points at 88-63 with 1:56 to go after a pair of free throws by Guerrero.
  • Samford finished the game with a 92-72 victory.
