Women's Basketball Falls In Season Opener At UT Martin

MARTIN, Tenn. –
The Samford women's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with an 89-68 loss at UT Martin Tuesday night at Skyhawk Arena.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • After Samford took a 2-0 lead, UTM responded with an 11-0 run to take a nine-points lead with 4:47 to go in the first quarter.
  • Samford fought back to cut the lead to five points and 14-9 with 3:34 left in the period following a three-pointer by Katie Allen, but the Skyhawks closed the quarter with a 10-4 run to take a 24-13 lead.
  • After the Skyhawks extended their lead to 26-13 early in the second quarter, Samford went on a 16-7 run to cut the lead to 33-29 with 3:27 to go in the quarter after a three-pointer by Paige Serup.
  • UTM, however, scored the last 12 points of the quarter to take a 45-29 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • With Samford trailing, 49-34 early in the third quarter, UTM pushed its lead out to 22 points at 56-34 with 6:51 to go in the quarter.
  • Samford fought back to close to within 16 points at 67-51 at the end of the third quarter.
  • In the fourth quarter, UTM pushed their lead to as many as 27 points at 84-57.
  • Samford could get no closer than 19 points the rest of the way as UTM came away with the 89-68 win.
