Women's Basketball Earns Tough OT Win At Denver, 87-83

DENVER, Colo. –
The Samford women's basketball team fell behind by 13 points in the third quarter, but came back to force overtime and eventually earn an 87-83 road win at Denver Wednesday afternoon.
 
With the win, Samford improves to 4-8 on the season. Denver falls to 7-5 with the loss.

  • Ta'Naisha Hill led the team with a career-high 21 points and four assists.
  • Samantha Fitzgerald had 15 points and seven rebounds.
  • Shauntai Battle posted her first career double-double with 11 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
  • Natalie Armstrong had 12 points, while Paige Serup added 10 points and a career-high eight rebounds.
  • For Denver, Courtney Smith led the team with 19 points.
  • Madison Nelson had 17 points and 12 rebounds.
  • The 87 points for Samford are the most in the game for the Bulldogs since an 88-66 win over UNCG on Feb. 9, 2015.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • Denver got off to a hot start, racing out to an 11-4 lead with 4:20 left in the first quarter.
  • The Pioneers held an 18-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.
  • Samford started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 18-16 with 7:44 to go in the period after a layup by Cassidy Williams.
  • The Bulldogs then took their first lead of the game at 23-22 with 6:05 left in the second quarter after a three-point play by Williams.
  • With Samford leading, 27-26, Denver went on a 7-0 run to take a 33-27 lead with 2:03 left before halftime.
  • A late layup by Fitzgerald cut the lead to 33-29, which is where the game stood heading into the locker room at halftime.
  • Samford cut the lead to 33-32 on a three-point play by Raven Omar early in the third quarter, but Denver answered with an 11-0 run to push its lead to 44-32 with 7:29 to go in the quarter.
  • With Denver leading, 46-33, Samford went on a 12-4 run to cut the lead back to five at 50-45 with 2:31 left in the quarter after a layup by Makaila Woolard.
  • Samford cut the lead back to four at 54-50 at the end of the third quarter.
  • A free throw and a layup by Woolard cut the lead to 54-53 early in the fourth quarter.
  • A jumper by Fitzgerald gave Samford a 57-56 lead, but Denver's Lauren Loven gave the Pioneers a 59-57 lead with a three-pointer with 6:02 to go.
  • Fitzgerald once again gave Samford the lead at 62-61 with a jumper with 3:58 left in the contest.
  • With Samford trailing, 70-69, Serup hit a three-pointer to give the Bulldogs a 72-70 lead with 1:03 to go in regulation.
  • With the Bulldogs leading, 73-71, Denver's Nelson hit two free throws to knot the score at 73-73 and force overtime.
  • Samford led through most of the overtime.
  • With the score tied at 81-81, Fitzgerald hit a three-pointer to put Samford ahead for good at 84-81 with 34 seconds to go.
  • Serup hit two free throws, and Fitzgerald hit one down the stretch as Samford held on for the 87-83 victory.
