Women's Hoops Falls At Home To UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford women's basketball team dropped a 66-41 decision to cross-town rival UAB Wednesday evening in the Pete Hanna Center.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 3-6 on the season. UAB improves to 7-1 with the win.


 
FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • For Samford, Natalie Armstrong scored nine points, grabbed 10 rebounds, and blocked seven shots. The seven blocked shots ties the school record set by Cortney Moore versus Nicholls State in 1997.
  • Samantha Fitzgerald led Samford in scoring with 11 points.
  • Charity Brown had seven points, seven rebounds and three assists for Samford.
  • UAB was led by Deanna Kuzmanic with 20 points.
  • Miyah Barnes and Katelynn Thomas added 10 points each for the Blazers.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • After Samford jumped out to a 3-0 lead, UAB answered with a 10-0 run to take a 10-3 lead with 2:58 to go in the first quarter.
  • Three late free throws by Samford's Cassidy Williams cut the Blazers' lead to 10-6 at the end of the first quarter.
  • In the second quarter, with Samford trailing, 14-8, UAB went on an 11-0 run to push its lead to 25-8 with 4:26 left in the period.
  • Samford fought back to cut the lead to 12 points at 25-13 with 2:50 to go in the quarter after a pair of free throws by Ta'Naisha Hill, but UAB closed the period with a 7-2 run to take a 32-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • UAB pushed its lead to 20 points at 37-17 with 7:37 left in the third quarter.
  • Samford cut the lead to 17 points at 41-24 with 3:54 to go in the quarter after a layup by Armstrong.
  • UAB, however, finished the period strong, holding a 48-26 lead after three quarters.
  • UAB led by as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter and the Blazers came away with the 66-41 victory.
