ATHENS, Ga. – The Samford softball team will compete in the Red and Black Tournament, hosted by the University of Georgia this weekend.
Samford will open the weekend against the host, Georgia, Friday at 4:30 p.m. (CT) in a game that can be seen live on the SEC Network+. Samford will play two games Saturday against Winthrop (9:30 a.m. CT) and Georgia (12 p.m. CT). On Sunday, Samford will take on Evansville (9:30 a.m. CT) and Winthrop (2:30 p.m. CT).
Samford enters the weekend with a record of 0-5. The Bulldogs are coming off a hard-fought 3-2 setback at in-state rival Jacksonville State Wednesday evening.
For the season, junior infielder
Madison Couch leads the team with a .308 batting average, with a home run and six RBI. Freshmen
Ashlyn Barnes and
Mekhi Mayfield are each hitting .250 so far this season. Mayfield,
Ryan Brzozoski and
Kelsey Royalty have driven in one run each so far for the Bulldogs.
Freshman
McKenna Gillespie has led the pitching staff with a 4.08 ERA through the first five games of the season.
Annalyn Yantis has posted a 6.81 ERA so far this season.
Georgia enters the weekend with a record of 4-1, following a 7-0 win over Oregon State last Saturday. This weekend will mark the opening of Winthrop's season. Evansville is currently 2-1 after an 11-0 win over Eastern Illinois last Sunday. Samford and Evansville met last Friday at the Mardi Gras Classic, with Evansville coming away with a 14-6 victory.
