BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team will host in-state rival Troy for the Bulldogs' home opener Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Samford Softball Stadium.
Samford enters the game with a record of 1-9. The Bulldogs went 1-4 last weekend in the Red and Black Tournament in Athens, Ga. The Bulldogs defeated Evansville (11-5) and fell twice each to 17th-ranked Georgia (10-0 and 10-2) and Winthrop (6-0 and 7-2).
So far this season,
Madison Couch leads Samford at the plate with a .296 batting average with one home run and eight RBI.
Shelby Maze is hitting .258 with a double and two RBI.
Kelsey Royalty and
Hannah Trombley are hitting .250 each so far this season.
In the circle for Samford,
McKenna Gillespie has a team-best 4.71 ERA.
Annalyn Yantis has a 5.33 ERA and a record of 1-2 so far this season.
Troy comes into the game with a mark of 5-3. The Trojans went 2-2 at a tournament at Arizona last weekend, earning wins over Bryant (5-2) and Montana (2-1), and falling to Montana (4-3) and Colorado State (5-0).
Samford and Troy are meeting for the 60th time, with Troy holding a 41-18 series lead. The teams met last season in Troy, with the Trojans earning 6-2 victory in the Trojan Classic.
