BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team used stellar pitching and timely hits to earn a doubleheader sweep of the Harvard Crimson on Saturday in a pair of wet, rainy games held at Joe Lee Griffin Field. In the Bulldogs' wins of 8-0 and 3-1, Samford only allowed a total of one run on six hits.

Samford (5-3) used Saturday's doubleheader to close out the four-game weekend series with a 3-1 record. The Bulldogs' pitching staff proved to be dominant and tallied 57 strikeouts in the four outings.

In the first game, Samford true freshman Samuel Strickland (1-0) hurled seven full innings of two-hit baseball and finished with nine strikeouts. Jake Greer came on and closed out the game by pitching the final two innings of the matchup and only allowed two total baserunners.

The Bulldogs exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the game away.

True freshman Max Pinto turned in the best game of his young, up-and-coming career as he finished 4-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored against Harvard (1-3). He also turned in a 2-for-2 performance in the second game Saturday and added a run.

Samford's Troy Dixon and Ayrton Schafer both registered a pair of base-hits in the opener, while Branden Fryman, Austin Edens, Sam Teague and Brooks Carlson also contributed to the Bulldogs' 12-hit performance as a team.

Samford owns a .289 batting average this season, while its opponents are only hitting .196.

In game two, the Bulldogs' Hamp Skinner (2-0) and Wyatt Burns combined to defeat the Crimson. Skinner started the game and pitched the first 3.2 innings of action. He struck out four and only allowed a single run.

Burns came on the fourth frame and then closed out the game to earn his first save of the season. He retired all 10 of the batters he faced and notched five strikeouts.

Offensively, sophomore catcher Anthony Mulrine drove in a pair of key runs in the bottom of the third inning to give Samford an early 3-0 lead. He finished 2-for-3 in the game, while tallying two RBI.

The Bulldogs' Carlson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Teague and Fryman also added key hits.

The red-hot Samford University baseball team will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs will square off against the Alabama Crimson Tide in a marquee in-state matchup to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
