BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team allowed big innings of six and four runs Tuesday as the Bulldogs suffered a 13-3 home loss against the Alabama Crimson Tide in a midweek, in-state matchup held at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The Crimson Tide scored four big runs in the fifth inning and then tacked on six scores to put the game away in the ninth frame.

With the loss,
Samford (5-4) moved to 4-2 at home this season. The Bulldogs' only losses at The Griff have come against Harvard and
Alabama (8-0).

The Crimson Tide, which remained undefeated this year, was paced offensively by junior right fielder Taylor Chandler. Chandler hit a pair of home runs in the contest, both to deep right field, and finished 2-for-3 at the plate with four RBI and three runs scored.

Alabama scored two runs in the third inning to strike first and take an early 2-0 lead. The Crimson Tide then scored four more runs in the fifth inning to garner a 6-0 advantage.

Samford battled back to tally three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as
Taylor Garris roped a two-run double to left center. Garris finished 1-for-4 on the night, while senior
Austin Edens and sophomore
Ayrton Schafer both turned in two-hit performances.

Following the Bulldogs' three-run tally in the sixth, Alabama answered with a run in the seventh and then tacked on six more scores in the top of the ninth to make it 13-3.

Samford's
Brooks Carlson turned in a 1-for-4 performance with one run and an RBI, while also making a pair of stellar plays in the field.

Alabama's
Garret Rukes (1-0) earned the victory. He started Tuesday's contest and only allowed one hit in two innings, while striking out four.

The Bulldogs sent nine pitchers to the mound and compiled six strikeouts, but also allowed seven walks. Senior
Tristan Widra (0-1) suffered the loss after allowed two runs in the third inning, only one of which was earned.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Friday at 3 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin a three-game road series against the Kennesaw State Owls to be held at Stillwell Stadium on the campus of Kennesaw State University in Kennesaw, Georgia.
