BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team's offensive attack was limited for a second straight outing Saturday as the Bulldogs registered two hits in a 1-0 home loss to the Georgia State Panthers in the second game of this weekend's nonconference series being held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Samford (7-9) received base hits from true freshman Samuel Strickland and junior Connor Burns in the game, both of which occurred in the second inning, but Georgia State (10-4) was able to quell the Bulldogs' scoring chances in the frame with an inning-ending double play.

Samford's next-and-final scoring opportunity occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning as junior Troy Dixon reached on an error and advanced to second base. He settled on second base with one out in the inning, but the Panthers' Jansen Acton was then able to get out of the jam and earn his third save of the season.

The Bulldogs' pitchers only allowed a total of four hits Saturday. Junior Stephen Jones (0-3) started the game and only gave up two hits and an unearned run in five innings on the mound. He also tallied four strikeouts and only allowed one walk.

Georgia State's run crossed the plate in the top of the fifth inning as Enrique Ferrer reached on an error and later came around to score on an RBI sacrifice bunt from second baseman Will Kilgore.

The Panthers' Jake Rogers (3-1) earned the victory on the mound as he hurled 7.1 innings of two-hit baseball. Rogers registered eight strikeouts and walked three, while Acton came in and closed out the final 1.2 innings of action.

Samford's Josh Rich came in to pitch the final four innings of the game and only allowed two hits. He closed out the game with four strikeouts.

The Bulldogs and Panthers will conclude this weekend's three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m. (CT) as the teams square off in the third-and-final matchup between the teams to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
