BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- With two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Sunday, Samford designated hitter
Anthony Mulrine connected for his team-leading fourth home run of the season as he powered a long drive off the foul pole in left field. Mulrine's homer trimmed Georgia State's lead to 9-7, but the visiting Panthers were able to get out of the inning and hang on for the victory held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the loss,
Samford (7-10) moved to 5-6 when playing at home this season. The Bulldogs will next be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as they travel to Montgomery for an in-state showdown against the Alabama State Hornets to be held at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.

Georgia State (11-4) jumped out in front Sunday with five runs in the top of the first inning. The Panthers then increased their lead to 6-0 with a score in the third frame.

In the bottom of the third inning, Samford used hits from
Ayrton Schafer,
Taylor Garris,
Troy Dixon and
Branden Fryman to score three runs. The Bulldogs' Schafer, Garris and Dixon all singled in the inning, while Fryman skied an RBI double to right field. Garris and
Max Pinto led Samford with two hits in the game as the Bulldogs outhit Georgia State, 9-5.

The teams then traded runs in the fourth and fifth innings before Georgia State used a pinch hit home run from Jake Corso to extend their lead to 9-4 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning.

In Samford's ninth, Garris led off the frame with a single through the left side. Then, with two outs,
Brooks Carlson earned a walk and then Mulrine blasted his two-out home run to left field.

Georgia State's
Jordan Lee (2-0) earned the victory on the mound Sunday after logging five innings of action. He allowed four runs on six hits and struck out two in the game. The Panthers' Brandon Baker, Tanner Thompson and Tylor Koch also pitched in the victory. Koch notched his first save of the season in the contest.

Hamp Skinner (2-1) started Sunday and was issued the loss. The Bulldogs also sent
Erin Baldwin,
Tristan Widra,
Wyatt Burns,
Jake Greer,
Jack Rude and
Caleb Maggio to the mound.

The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Wednesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel to Montgomery for a midweek road test against the Alabama State Hornets to be held at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
