BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team scored three quick runs in the opening three innings of Saturday's game and then used some clutch pitching down the stretch to register a 3-2 home victory against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in the second outing of this weekend's in-state series being held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Â
Samford (9-11) jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Bulldogs'
Troy Dixon opened the frame with a single to center field and later came around to score as
Alabama A&M (5-14) starting pitcher
Jalen Pearson (0-1) walked in a run as
Brooks Carlson earned an RBI.
Â
Just a few pitches later, Samford's
Branden Fryman scored on a wild pitch from Pearson to make the score 2-0.
Â
The Bulldogs' third run of the game was tallied in the bottom of the third inning as
Austin Edens rifled a single to center field with one out. After a two-base error, Edens scored from third as
Max Pinto sent the game-winning sacrifice fly to deep left field for an RBI.
Â
Samford's four hits Saturday were tallied by Dixon, Edens,
Taylor Garris and
Luis Fuentes.
Â
Alabama A&M mounted a late rally with runs in the sixth and eighth innings, but Samford's
Wyatt Burns came on in relief in the eighth frame and shut the door to accumulate his third save of the young season. Burns struck out two of the five batters he faced and didn't allow a single hit in 1.1 innings of action.
Â
Junior
Connor Radcliff started on the mound for Samford on Saturday and pitched a solid first inning. The appearance proved to be Radcliff's first of the season.
Â
Sophomore
Hamp Skinner (3-1) entered the game in the second inning and went on to tally the win by only allowing one unearned run in five full frames of action, including six strikeouts. He left the game after the sixth inning with a 3-1 lead in the contest.
Â
Alabama A&M finished Saturday's game with nine hits as Jonathan Smith, Carson McGregory and Carlton Peppers all registered two-hit performances.
Â
Samford and Alabama A&M are scheduled to square off in the third-and-final game of the series Sunday at noon (CT) at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
