BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team earned its first three-game series sweep of the young 2018 campaign Sunday as the Bulldogs defeated the Alabama A&M Bulldogs, 9-2, in a home matchup held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the decisive win,
Samford (10-11) improved to 8-6 when playing at home this season. The Bulldogs also extended their winning streak against
Alabama A&M (5-15) to five straight outings, dating back to April 19, 2016.

Samford tallied 14 hits Sunday and were paced by junior
Troy Dixon and freshman
Brooks Carlson. Dixon finished a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a runs scored, while Carlson went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and a massive home run deep off the batter's eye in straightaway center field.

Carlson's round-tripper proved to be the first of his collegiate career.

The Bulldogs also received a multi-hit performance from freshman
Blaine Smith, who started at second base and turned in a 2-for-3 outing at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Samford's
Branden Fryman,
Austin Edens,
Max Pinto and
Sam McWhorter also registered key base hits Sunday.

Additionally, the Bulldogs'
Sam Teague put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth inning as he sent a two-out blast to deep left-center field to drive in a pair of runs and extend Samford's advantage to 8-2.

The Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning, two more in the second frame and then used Teague's blast in the sixth to tally three scores and garner their 8-2 advantage. Both of Alabama A&M's runs were notched in the top of the second inning.

Samford's
Stephen Jones (1-3) started the game on the mound and earned the victory by hurling five full innings of action. He only allowed two runs on five hits and struck out four batters in the contest.

The Bulldogs also received strong pitcher performances from
Samuel Strickland,
Caleb Maggio,
Billy Creger and
Kyle Stuart.

Alabama A&M's starting pitcher
Jaret Britt (2-3) was issued the loss Sunday. He allowed five runs (three earned) on 10 hits in the game and walked three Samford hitters.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel to Troy to face the Troy Trojans in an in-state midweek contest to be held at Riddle-Pace Field.
