BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team took advantage of an outstanding pitching performance from sophomore lefthander
Hamp Skinner on Tuesday as the Bulldogs rolled to an 8-2 road victory against the UAB Blazers in a crosstown-rivalry game held at Regions Field.
Â
With the win,
Samford (12-14) continued its recent lopsided success against
UAB (10-13). The Bulldogs have been victorious in five of the last six meetings between the teams, including a dominant 14-2 record dating back to April 20, 2010.
Â
Samford received brilliant pitching performances from Skinner,
Josh Rich (1-3),
Jack Rude and
Erin Baldwin. The Bulldogs didn't allow a single earned run in the contest and only gave up a total of six hits while striking out 12.
Â
Skinner turned in his best outing of the season as he registered a career-high 10 strikeouts in 4.2 innings of action. Samford's talented sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida, only allowed three hits in the start.
Â
Rich, who proved to be the Bulldogs' pitcher of record in the fifth inning, didn't allow a hit in 0.2 innings of work, while Rude and Baldwin came in late to close out the game and shut the door on the Blazers.
Â
Samford jumped out to an early 6-0 lead with two runs in the first and then four more in the second. The Bulldogs later tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the seventh and eighth innings.
Â
Both of the UAB's runs were scored in the bottom of the seventh and were unearned. The Blazers'
Cole Whitman (0-3) was issued the loss after he started and allowed five runs on three hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Â
Offensively, Samford was paced by senior first baseman
Austin Edens who finished 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI. The Bulldogs also received a multi-RBI performance from sophomore shortstop
Branden Fryman.
Â
Samford's
Connor Burns tallied a key hit in the contest and scored a run, while sophomore catcher
Anthony Mulrine crossed the plate three times for the Bulldogs on Tuesday.
Â
The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Thursday at 5 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin a three-game Southern Conference road series against the Furman Paladins to be held at the Latham Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina.
