BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team only allowed two hits Wednesday as the Bulldogs earned a key 5-1 home victory against the Austin Peay Governors in a midweek nonconference contest held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

Samford (7-7) rattled off 11 hits in the win and used a big four-run third inning to help defeat Austin Peay (8-5). The Bulldogs also added a score in the eighth frame to assist in putting the game out of reach.

The Governors' lone run of the contest was scored in the fifth inning.

Samford's Tristan Widra (1-1) started the game and hurled four shutout innings. The Bulldogs' senior right-hander from Hoover also added five strikeouts in the victory. Fellow seniors Jake Greer, Josh Rich and Erin Baldwin all contributed with solid outings on the mound as well.

Austin Peay's Tyler Thompson (0-2) allowed four runs in the third inning and was handed the loss.

Samford's Troy Dixon, Branden Fryman and Sam Teague all registered two-hit performances Wednesday, while true freshman Brooks Carlson continued to swing a hot bat and turned in a brilliant 3-for-4 outing at the plate. Carlson, who played first base for the first time in his career, now leads the team with a .381 batting average this season.

Additionally, the Bulldogs received key run-producing hits from Anthony Mulrine and Max Pinto. Mulrine tallied a two-RBI single in the third inning, while Pinto also drove in a run in the frame with a single up the middle.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin a three-game home series against the Georgia State Panthers to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The teams are also scheduled to play Saturday at 2 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m.
