BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team was defeated by the Georgia State Panthers on Friday, 2-0, in the opening contest of a three-game nonconference series being held this weekend at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the loss,
Samford (7-8) moved to 5-4 when playing at home this season.
Georgia State (9-4), behind a brilliant pitching performance from right-hander
Hunter Gaddis (4-0), earned its fifth win in six outings. Gaddis only allowed three hits in the complete-game victory.

The Bulldogs' base-hits were tallied by junior
Troy Dixon, sophomore
Branden Fryman and true freshman
Mason Williamson.

Georgia State scored a run in the top of the first inning as Nick Gatewood connected on his third home run of the season. The Panthers later scored in the eighth frame to make the score 2-0.

Samford put together scoring opportunities in the sixth and ninth innings, but wasn't able to capitalize on the chances. The Bulldogs left five runners on base in the game.

Senior
Cody Shelton (0-2) started for Samford and turned in a solid performance. The Bulldogs' Friday night starter only allowed a single run on five hits and struck out a pair of hitters, but was issued the tough-luck loss in the contest.

Jack Rude,
Billy Creger and
Carson Cupo also earned time on the mound Friday.

The Bulldogs and Panthers will continue this weekend's three-game series Saturday at noon (CT) as the teams square off in the second matchup between the teams to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
