Softball To Host Austin Peay In Doubleheader Wednesday

GAME NOTES

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Samford softball team will step out of Southern Conference play to host former Ohio Valley Conference rival Austin Peay in a doubleheader Wednesday at 4 p.m. at the Samford Softball Field.
 
Samford enters the weekend with a record of 14-30 overall and 4-4 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs won two-of-three games from Western Carolina over the weekend. Samford dropped the first game, 7-2, but came back to take games two and three by scores of 7-2 and 14-6 in five innings.
 
For Samford this season, senior center fielder Shelby Maze leads the team with a .417 batting average with three doubles, one triple, nine RBI and a team-high 29 runs scored. Maze has already set Samford career records for hits (280), runs scored (143) and batting average (.293). She is second among active players in the NCAA in career hits, and she was named the SoCon Player of the Week on Monday.
 
Hannah Trombley is hitting .288 with four home runs and a team-high 24 RBI. Whitney Hinton leads the team in home runs with six, while Madison Couch and Lexie Higgins have five each.
 
In the circle, McKenna Gillespie has a team-best 4.09 ERA, to go along with her 3-7 record. Taylor DeCelles leads the team in wins with a 5-12 record and a 5.81 ERA, while Annalyn Yantis has a mark of 4-10, to go along with her 4.83 ERA.
 
Austin Peay is currently 24-14 overall and 8-4 in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Governors were swept in a doubleheader by Jacksonville State last Friday. APSU dropped the games by scores of 2-1 and 3-5.
 
Samford and Austin Peay have met 42 previous times, with Samford holding a 28-14 advantage in the series. The teams played in a doubleheader last season in Clarksville, Tenn., with APSU winning by scores of 5-2 and 10-7. The teams were co-members of the Ohio Valley Conference from 2004 through 2008.
