GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The Samford University baseball team scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning Sunday to garner a 5-4 advantage over the UNCG Spartans in the third game of this weekend's Southern Conference series, but the homestanding Spartans went on to rally for three runs in the bottom of the frame en route to an eventual 7-6 victory held at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

With the loss,
Samford (24-17, 10-5 SoCon) moved to 10-7 when playing on the road this season. The Bulldogs will remain on the road for one more game this week as they will travel Tuesday to face the No. 21-ranked Auburn Tigers. On April 10, Samford defeated Auburn at home at Joe Lee Griffin Field, 12-3.

UNCG (29-10, 10-2 SoCon) continued its stellar performance at home this season by improving to 20-6 when playing at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

The Spartans currently hold sole possession of first place in the SoCon standings.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 1-0 lead Sunday as true freshman
Brooks Carlson blasted his sixth home run of the season over the left field fall. Carlson finished the game with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate with two runs scored and an RBI.

Samford's early momentum proved to be short-lived in the contest as UNCG quickly answered with four runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 4-1 lead.

Seven of the Spartans' nine hitters turned in base-hits Sunday. Tripp Shelton led the way with a 1-for-3 outing at the plate, his lone connection being a decisive two-run homer to left field in the bottom of the fifth inning.

After Samford rallied to score four runs on no hits in the top of the fifth inning to scrounge together a 5-4 advantage, UNCG answered with three scores in the bottom of the frame, including Shelton's home run. The Spartans' lone round-tripper of the weekend's series gave them a 7-5 lead, which ended up being a 7-6 victory in the series finale.

Both teams sent three pitchers to the mound Sunday. Samford's
Stephen Jones and UNCG's Jake Lewis both started for their respective squads, but neither factored in the decision.

The Bulldogs'
Wyatt Burns (3-2) entered in the second inning, but was ultimately issued the loss as he allowed three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings of action.

Erin Baldwin looked dominant in the contest as he retired all nine batters he faced, including a pair of strikeouts.

UNCG's
Easton Welch (4-1) received the win on the mound, while Andrew Wantz picked up his eighth save of the season.

Offensively, the Bulldogs' Carlson led the way with a pair of hits in the game. Samford's
Troy Dixon,
Austin Edens,
Ayrton Schafer and
Anthony Mulrine also tallied base-hits in the matchup.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs travel to Auburn, Alabama, for a marquee midweek matchup against the No. 21-ranked Auburn Tigers to be held at Plainsman Park.
