AUBURN, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team allowed five runs on two hits in the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday as the No. 19-ranked Auburn Tigers used the mid-game rally to defeat the Bulldogs, 7-2, in a late-season nonconference contest held at Plainsman Park.

With the loss, Samford (24-18) moved to 10-8 when playing on the road this season. The Bulldogs will return home this weekend for a three-game series against SIUE to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The series is slated to open Friday at 6 p.m. (CT), followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.

Admission will be free for all three games of the series.

Samford's upcoming set against SIUE will mark the beginning of a seven-game homestanding. Next week, the Bulldogs are scheduled to host crosstown-rival UAB on Tuesday at 6 p.m., before welcoming Southern Conference-foe Wofford to The Griff for a critical three-game series. The Bulldogs currently own a 10-5 record in league play this season.

Auburn (30-12) continued its stellar play at home this year. The Tigers boast a 23-5 record at Plainsman Park this season, including a near-perfect 18-1 mark against nonconference opponents. Auburn has now won six games in a row and will travel to face No. 1-ranked Florida this weekend in Gainesville, Florida.

The Tigers struck first Tuesday with a run in the bottom of the first inning. The game remained at 1-0 until the fourth inning when Auburn rallied to score five runs on just two hits in the frame, with the big blow of the game being a two-run homer from freshman Steven Williams.

Williams finished the contest 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and a run scored.

Samford, trailing 7-0 at the time, notched a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning as sophomores Ayrton Schafer and Ryan Crockett both registered RBI.

The Bulldogs' Brooks Carlson, Anthony Mulrine and Schafer all turned in two-hit performances Tuesday, while Troy Dixon, Austin Edens and Taylor Garris added base hits as well.

Samford's Hamp Skinner (4-2) started on the mound for the Bulldogs and was issued the loss. He allowed two earned runs in 3.1 innings of action against Auburn. Samford also sent six relievers to the hill in Jack Rude, Caleb Maggio, Billy Creger, Carson Cupo, Connor Burns and Tristan Widra.

The Tigers' Jack Owen (2-2) earned the victory Tuesday after starting and allowing two earned runs in 5.1 innings of duty. Auburn's Elliott Anderson then entered the game in the sixth inning and picked up the three-inning save, his first of the season.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Friday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs welcome the SIUE Cougars to Birmingham, for a three-game nonconference series to be held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
