BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford University baseball team was defeated in a pair of nonconference matchups Saturday as the Bulldogs dropped decisions of 5-0 and 4-2 to the SIUE Cougars in a late-season doubleheader held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the pair of defeats,
Samford (24-21) had its losing streak extended to seven straight games. Since winning 13 consecutive games, the second longest winning stretch in school history, the Bulldogs have now lost seven straight matchups against UNCG, No. 19 Auburn and
SIUE (13-29).

Samford will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs remain at home to face the UAB Blazers. Earlier this season, Samford won on the road at UAB, 8-2, to start their 13-game winning streak.

GAME ONE - - SIUE def. SAMFORD, 5-0
The Cougars'
Kenny Serwa (3-4) hurled a complete-game shutout to lift SIUE to a 5-0 triumph in the opening game of the doubleheader. He only allowed a single hit in the contest, which proved to be a line-drive single to left field from freshman outfielder
Max Pinto in the bottom of the second inning.

Since Pinto's hit, Serwa retired Samford's final 24 batters of the game.

The Cougars' runs were scored in the second, fourth, sixth and eighth innings. SIUE tallied an early run in the second before scoring twice in the fourth frame. The Cougars then added single scores in both the sixth and eighth stanzas to earn the 5-0 victory.

Aaron Goecks led SIUE's offense with a 2-for-4 outing at the plate. He also powered his fourth home run of the season in the game. Brock Hammit drew four walks and scored three times in the contest.

Samford used six pitchers in the game and struck out nine hitters. True freshman
Samuel Strickland (6-2) was issued the loss, his second of the season. He allowed three runs on three hits in four innings of action. Strickland also struck out three batters in the matchup.

Jack Rude,
Carson Cupo,
Caleb Maggio,
Tristan Widra and
Luke Corbin all earned time on the mound.

GAME TWO - - SIUE def. SAMFORD, 4-2
The Cougars rallied to score three runs on three hits in the top of the first inning, including a three-run homer from Hammit to jump out to an early 3-0 lead on the Bulldogs.

SIUE's starting pitcher David Llorens only last an inning in the contest before leaving with an injury.
Ryan Byrd (1-7) then entered the game cold from the bullpen and notched his first victory of the season. He allowed two runs on four hits in four full innings of play, but left the game with a 3-2 advantage following the fifth frame.

Samford's
Austin Edens and
Ryan Crockett both registered RBI in the game as the Bulldogs nearly managed the comeback. Edens finished 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored, while Crockett went 1-for-4 with an RBI.

Edens' RBI totaled the 180
th of his illustrious four-year career. He is currently just one RBI shy of tying Heath Quinn's school-record mark of 181 in the category.

Anthony Mulrine and
Blaine Smith also notched base hits in the game.

With the score in SIUE's favor in the top of the eighth inning, 3-2, the Cougars were able to tack on another run as Aaron Jackson hit his second home run of the season to center field.

Mason McReaken struck out the side in the ninth inning to earn his sixth save of the season.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs welcome the UAB Blazers to Joe Lee Griffin Field for a crosstown-rivalry showdown.
