BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford's
Austin Edens, the NCAA's active career leader in home runs, blasted a pair of home runs, the 48
th and 49
th of his illustrious career Tuesday, including a grand slam and six RBI as the Bulldogs rolled to a 15-6 home victory against the Alabama State Hornets in an in-state matchup held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

In the victory,
Samford (16-14) pounded out a season-high 19 hits and scored a season-high 15 runs. The Bulldogs also extended their winning streak to five straight games.

Edens, who is Samford's all-time home run hitter with 49 career blasts, paced the Bulldogs' offensive attack Tuesday with a 3-for-3 outing at the plate. He also added a pair of runs scored to go along with his season-high six RBI.

Additionally, Samford's
Branden Fryman posted a 4-for-6 outing at the dish with three runs and two RBI. The Bulldogs'
Troy Dixon added a 3-for-5 performance with three runs scored and an RBI, while
Anthony Mulrine and
Taylor Garris both registered two-hit outings. Mulrine drove in three RBI with a 2-for-5 day at the plate, as Garris finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.

Samford also received key hits Tuesday from
Brooks Carlson,
Ayrton Schafer,
Sam Teague,
Ryan Crockett and
Max Pinto.

With the loss,
Alabama State (14-13) fell to 2-8 against the Bulldogs since 2004. The Hornets'
Channing Walker (0-2) suffered the loss on the mound. He started the game and allowed five earned runs on eight hits in four innings pitched.

Samford's
Caleb Maggio (1-0) earned his first decision of the 2018 season Tuesday. The Bulldogs' crafty junior right-hander entered the game in the fourth inning and only allowed one run on two hits in two total frames of action.
Hamp Skinner started the midweek contest and pitched three innings. Samford's
Tristan Widra,
Josh Rich,
Erin Baldwin and
Jake Greer also earned action.

Heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, Alabama State held a 3-2 lead in the contest.

The Bulldogs then rattled off 13 runs in the next five stanzas to put the game away, including Edens' grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning. With his performance Tuesday, Edens surpassed former Samford great Heath Quinn for the school's all-time lead in total bases. Edens now boasts 430 total bases in his career.

The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Friday at 5 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs begin a key three-game SoCon road series against The Citadel Bulldogs in Charleston, South Carolina.
