CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The first-place Samford University baseball team extended its winning streak to eight straight games Sunday as the Bulldogs cruised to a 15-2 run-rule victory on the road against The Citadel Bulldogs en route to a demonstrative three-game series sweep in a Southern Conference series held at Joe Riley Park.
Â
With the win,
Samford (19-14, 7-2 SoCon) remained undefeated since March 25, and scored 15 runs in a game for the second time this week. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs accumulated 19 hits in a 15-6 home victory against Alabama State.
Â
Samford's current eight-game winning streak is its longest since 2015 when the Bulldogs compiled a nine-game victorious stretch and featured triumphs against Murray State, Troy, ETSU, Alabama State and Wofford from April 10-24.
Â
Junior
Stephen Jones (3-4) started Sunday's game on the mound for Samford and was handed a 6-0 lead before even stepping foot on the field.
Â
The Bulldogs opened the game with six runs on five hits, including a trio of doubles in the top of the first inning as they jumped out to an early 6-0 lead over
The Citadel (12-19, 3-6 SoCon).
Â
In the bottom half of the frame, The Citadel scored its only two runs of the game a pair of hits. The homestanding Bulldogs' scores were driven in by Bryce Leasure and Adam Colon.
Â
From that point on, it was all Samford.
Â
The Bulldogs scored nine unanswered runs and pounded out 15 total hits as their pitching staff only allowed a total of three hits down the stretch. Samford's Jones hurled five full innings of action en route to the victory, while
Jack Rude and
Hamp Skinner both came in to pitch quick frames in the sixth and seventh, respectively.
Â
Sunday's game was called after the seventh inning due to the SoCon's getaway day travel rules. On the final day of a three-game series, if a team is leading by 10 or more runs after the seventh inning, then the game will be called.
Â
Offensively, every starting player in Samford's lineup scored a run, including
Max Pinto and
Brooks Carlson, who both paved the way with three apiece. Four Bulldogs registered multi-hit performances and were led by
Anthony Mulrine's perfect 4-for-4 outing at the plate. Samford's talented sophomore catcher also drove in three runs and scored twice.
Â
Taylor Garris turned in a brilliant 3-for-4 outing Sunday, while
Branden Fryman and Pinto both notched two-hit outings. Pinto, the Bulldogs' speedy true freshman from Miami, Florida, finished 2-for-5 at the plate with three runs and three RBI, while also making a tremendous, face-first diving catch in foul territory near the wall in right field.
Â
Also earning huge hits for Samford were
Austin Edens, Ayrton Schaffer,
Connor Burns and
Blaine Smith.
Â
With the victory, Samford improved to 20-10 all-time against The Citadel. The Bulldogs have now claimed the last three series' between the teams, including a similar series sweep at Joe Riley Park two seasons ago.
Â
The Samford University baseball team will next be in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. (CT) as the Bulldogs play at home against the No. 13-ranked Auburn Tigers at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
