BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Samford senior reliever
Wyatt Burns turned in a record-setting performance Friday as the Bulldogs' wicked right-hander from Pinson registered two scoreless innings of action en route to his school-record 28
th career save in a 4-2 triumph against the Wofford Terriers in a Southern Conference showdown held at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
Â
Burns only allowed one hit in two innings of action and masterfully picked up his eighth save of the season. With the stop, he surpassed former Bulldog-great
Andres Gracia for the top spot in the record book. Gracia closed out his career with 27 saves.
Â
Burns is also the SoCon's active career leader in saves.
Â
Samford (26-21, 11-5 SoCon) received stellar pitching performances from seniors
Cody Shelton,
Josh Rich (3-4) and Burns Friday. Shelton started the game and only allowed two unearned runs in six full innings of action, while tallying a game-high seven strikeouts and limiting
Wofford (30-17, 10-6 SoCon) to just four hits in 24 batters faced.
Â
Rich entered the contest in the seventh inning and quickly retired all three hitters he faced, including a pair of strikeouts.
Â
Burns then took the mound in the eighth and closed out the 4-2 victory for the Bulldogs.
Â
Wofford's
Adam Scott (7-4), the reigning SoCon Pitcher of the Month and of the Week, finished with just four strikeouts Friday. Last week, he registered a season-high 17 Ks at home against UNCG.
Â
Samford jumped ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning and then tacked on two more runs against Scott in the seventh. All in all, Scott allowed two earned runs on eight hits in 6.2 innings of action.
Â
The Bulldogs' two huge runs in the bottom of the seventh proved to be the difference in the game and were both scored with two outs.
Â
Following a strikeout and a popup to shortstop,
Taylor Garris initiated Samford's rally with a single to right field. He then scurried ahead to second base on a wild pitch from Scott. Next up, the Bulldogs'
Ryan Crockett delivered the hit of the game as he sent a long double over McClain Bradley's head in right field. Garris scored the game-winning run on the play.
Â
Samford's next hitter,
Branden Fryman, drew a walk to keep the inning alive and
Troy Dixon blistered an RBI single to center field as Crockett scored all the way from second base.
Â
Garris finished 2-for-3 at the plate in the victory, while Dixon also posted a two-hit outing at 2-for-4. Additionally, Samford received huge base hits from Fryman,
Ayrton Schafer and
