OXFORD, Miss. – The Samford volleyball team dropped matches to Ohio State and Southern Mississippi on the final day of the Rebel Invitational Saturday. In the first match of the day, Samford fell to Ohio State, 3-0 (26-28, 19-25, 16-25. The Bulldogs then dropped a 3-2 (19-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, 13-15) thriller to Southern Miss in the final match of the tournament.

KEY MOMENTS
- The first set was a tight, back-and-forth battle, the entire way.
- After Samford tied the score at 22-22, the teams traded points until Ohio State was able to pull out the 28-26 win on a kill by Vanja Bukilic, followed by a Samford attack error.
- In the second set, Ohio State was able to extend its lead to five at 20-15, but Samford fought back to cut the lead to three at 22-19.
- Ohio State, however, scored the final three points of the set for the 25-19 win.
- In the third set, Ohio State jumped out to an early 11-4 lead.
- The Buckeyes extended their lead to 10 points at 20-10, and Samford could get no closer than six points the rest of the way, as OSU took the set, 25-16 and the match, 3-0.

KEY MOMENTS
- In the first set, with Samford trailing, 15-13, Southern Miss scored five-straight to extend its lead to seven at 20-13.
- The Golden Eagles pushed their lead to as many as eight points at 23-15, and they came away with the 25-19 win.
- Southern Miss jumped out to an early 10-4 lead in the second set.
- Samford fought back to cut the lead to one at 22-21, but USM pulled out the 25-22 win.
- In the third set, Samford jumped out to an early 7-2 lead.
- Southern Miss came back to take a 20-19 lead, but Samford outscored the Golden Eagles, 6-2 the rest of the way for the 25-22 win.
- The fourth set was close until, with Samford leading, 13-12, the Bulldogs went on a 7-1 run to take a 20-13 lead.
- Southern Miss came back to cut the lead to two at 22-20, but after a Samford timeout, the Bulldogs closed out the 25-22 win.
- With Southern Miss leading, 7-5 in the fifth set, Samford went on a 5-1 run to take a 10-8 lead, forcing the Golden Eagles to call a timeout.
- With Samford leading, 13-11, Southern Miss scored the final four points to earn the 15-13 set win and the 3-2 match victory.

- Krista Boesing and Kelsi Hobbs led Samford with 19 kills each.
- Deaton followed with 14 kills in the match.
- Deaton had 17 digs, while Anderton followed with 16.
- Anderton also contributed 53 assists.

Samford (2-5) will return to action Friday, Sept. 7 and Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Ohio Invitational. In the tournament, Samford will take on Ohio (Friday at 6 p.m.), Virginia Tech (Saturday at 11 a.m.) and IUPUI (Saturday at 4 p.m.).
