JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – The Samford volleyball team overcame a 2-0 deficit to win the last three sets and take a 3-2 (25-27, 20-25, 36-34, 25-23, 25-23) win at ETSU Friday evening at Brooks Gymnasium. With the win, Samford improves to 8-9 overall and 3-0 in Southern Conference play. ETSU falls to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in league play. This marks the first time Samford has started 3-0 in SoCon play since 2014.
KEY MOMENTS
- In the first set, ETSU jumped out to a 17-10 lead.
- With Samford trailing, 21-16, the Bulldogs fought back to knot the score at 25-25, but ETSU scored the next two points to pull out the 27-25 set win.
- Through most of the second set, neither team was able to take more than a two-point lead.
- With the score tied at 19-19, ETSU closed the set with a 6-1 run to take the 25-20 victory.
- The third set was tight throughout. With ETSU serving for match point, leading, 25-24, Samford scored the next two points to take a 26-25 lead.
- The teams traded points the rest of the way until, with the score tied at 34-34, Samford used a kill by Elise Watford and an ETSU attack error to take the 36-34 set victory.
- In the fourth set, ETSU jumped out to a 19-14 lead.
- Samford fought its way back into the match, and with the score tied at 23-23, Samford scored the next two points to win the set 25-23 and force a fifth and deciding set.
- In the fifth and final set, Samford jumped out to a 13-8 lead.
- ETSU, however, fought back to tie the score at 15-15 and forcing the set into extra points.
- The teams traded points from then until back-to-back kills by Watford gave Samford the 25-23 set win and the 3-2 match victory.
FROM THE BOX SCORE
- The teams combined for a total of 41 extra points in the match, with three of the five sets going to extra points.
- Krista Boesing tied a career high with 22 kills.
- Lauren Deaton had a career-high 27 digs.
- Taylor Anderton's 61 assists were one away from tying her career high.
