MACON, Ga. – The Samford women's basketball team opened Southern Conference play with a tough 76-68 overtime loss at defending SoCon champion Mercer Saturday afternoon at Hawkins Arena.
With the loss, Samford falls to 5-11 overall and 0-1 in Southern Conference play. Mercer improves to 9-7 overall and 1-0 in league play.

- Natalie Armstrong tied a career high with 19 points, and she grabbed eight rebounds to lead Samford in both categories.
- Shauntai Battle scored 14 points for the Bulldogs.
- Paige Serup and Ta'Naisha Hill added 10 points each for Samford.
- Amanda Thompson led Mercer with 24 points and 11 rebounds.
- KeKe Calloway added 21 points, while Shannon Titus had 17 points for the Bears.

- After Samford grabbed an early 4-1 lead, Mercer came back to take a 7-4 advantage with 5:10 to go in the first quarter.
- Samford fought back to take an 11-10 lead with 2:15 left in the first quarter after a put-back by Armstrong.
- Samford held an 11-10 lead after the first period of play.
- With Samford leading, 13-10, Mercer went on a 14-4 run to take a 24-17 lead with 3:41 left in the second quarter.
- Mercer held a 27-22 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
- Mercer opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 34-22 lead with 8:19 left in the period.
- Samford came back to cut the lead to eight points at 34-26 with 7:34 left in the quarter after a basket by Armstrong.
- The Bulldogs were able to close to within three points at 38-35 and again at 41-38, but Mercer held a 43-39 lead at the end of the third quarter.
- Mercer stretched its lead to seven points at 49-42 with 6:33 to go in the fourth quarter.
- With Mercer leading, 52-45, Samford fought back to cut the lead to three at 60-57 with 1:41 left following a three-pointer by Hill.
- With Samford trailing, 64-61, Serup hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to knot the score at 64-64 and force overtime.
- Mercer scored the first seven points of overtime to take a 71-64 lead with 2:21 left.
- The Bears never trailed in the extra period, coming away with the 76-68 win.
