Bulldogs Come Back To Force OT, But Fall At ETSU, 81-72

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. –
The Samford men's basketball team trailed by 17 points early in the second half, but the Bulldogs came back to force overtime, but eventually fell by a score of 81-72 at ETSU Thursday night at Freedom Hall.
 
With the loss, Samford falls to 11-5 overall and 1-2 in Southern Conference play. ETSU improves to 12-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

  • Josh Sharkey dished out a career-high 14 assists, to go along with his 13 points for Samford.
  • Brandon Austin and Ruben Guerrero shared the team lead in scoring with 16 points each.
  • Robert Allen added 13 points for the Bulldogs.
  • Tray Boyd III led ETSU with 22 points.
  • Jeromy Rodriguez had 12 points and 19 rebounds.
  • Mladen Armus added 11 points and 17 rebounds.
  • The Bucs outrebounded the Bulldogs, 48-31.
  • Both teams shot 44 percent from the floor.
 
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
  • ETSU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead with 18:04 left in the first half.
  • Samford answered with a 10-1 run to take a 12-8 lead with 15:13 to go in the half after a three-pointer by Allen.
  • ETSU fought back with an 11-2 run of its own to take a 19-14 lead with 11:32 left in the opening half.
  • The Bucs pushed their lead to eight points at 27-19 with 8:16 left in the half.
  • With ETSU leading, 34-29, the Bucs closed the half with a 13-3 run to take a 47-32 lead into the locker room at halftime.
  • After ETSU pushed its lead to 49-32 early in the second half, Samford fought back with a 17-4 run to cut the lead to 53-49 with 12:46 left in the second half after a three-pointer by Austin.
  • The Bucs pushed their lead back out to nine at 60-51 with 8:37 left in the contest.
  • Samford fought back to tie the game at 70-70 on a three-pointer by Myron Gordon with 1:18 to go in the contest.
  • Both teams had opportunities to score in the final minute, but neither team could get a shot to go and the game headed to overtime knotted at 70-70.
  • In the overtime, after Samford took a 72-70 lead on a pair of free throws by Sharkey, ETSU closed the game with an 11-0 run to close out the 81-72 ETSU win.
